[Description]
BABY DOLL
The Baby Doll is traditionally a triad representation of a doll, a girl and a woman in a single character. This triad represents various stages and facets of femininity, challenging and subverting traditional gender norms. The performer carries a doll child and identifies male spectators as being the father of the child while scandalously demanding financial support. Baby Doll usually stops male passers-by and various audience members, accusing them of fathering the child, then embarrassing them into giving money for milk, clothing, other needs, and/or to simply cease her accusations. The baby doll character was often used to highlight and mock the behaviour of men who fathered children but did not take responsibility for them. Male performers in Baby Doll costumes added an additional layer of satire and subversion, further questioning societal norms about masculinity and femininity. Sexyy Red's appropriation of the Baby Doll character can be seen as a contemporary evolution of this archetype.
