JAB JAB
In French, 'Jab' means “devil,” a derogatory term by which slave owners would refer to enslaved Africans. Demonic in appearance, people usually attribute Jab Molassie to an interpretation of a devil but it is also believed that the Jab Molassie is an Afro-Caribbean depiction of the trickster Orisha deity, Esu. Jab Jab moves through carnival with a bold, menacing and mischievous energy, symbolising a devilish trickster, one with deep roots in resistance. Jab Jabs embody the spirit of those before them who used performance and ritual to mock and challenge their colonial masters. Today different types of devil masquerade exist throughout the Caribbean: Jab Jab (Grenada), Blue Devils (Trinidad & Tobago), Lanse Kod (Haiti) pétèd-fwèt (Guadeloupe). Jab Jab characteristics include: body covered in oil or paint and sometimes carrying live snakes, dead pigs and dragging chains. Some Jabs can be found carrying suitcases, briefcases, pushing empty pushchairs. They can also often have piece of fish tail or octopus in their mouthes. Of recent this character has been enacted through - Doja Cat, Lil Nas x, Playboy Carti, Lil Uzi Vert and in previous years - Three 6 Mafia, DMX, Geto Boys, NWA.
